One month ago IBM launched Domino V10. We had the chance to talk to Andrew Manby, Director of Product Management, IBM Collaboration Solutions after the roadshow. Here is the interview.
Q1. What are your impressions from the multiple Domino V10 launch events across the world?
Fabulous. My first impression was the overwhelming excitement about the arrival of V10. We had over 350 people attend the World Premiere of Domino V10 in Frankfurt, and 7,000+ people watching on the live stream. The atmosphere in the building was electric.
The feedback I’ve received since the launch in London, Paris and Vienna has been overwhelmingly positive. For example, demos showing the “art of the possible” with Domino V10 integrated with Office 365, Slack, and Microsoft Teams really resonated with people. It sparked their imagination to show what V10 could mean to their business, i.e., the enormous value that comes with being open and integrated could be a game-changer for some clients.
We started this journey in October2017 with the announcement of a strategic partnership with HCL and worldwide #domino2025 jams. At that point, people were hopeful but not yet convinced that we would able to deliver a major release. However, as V10 unfolded and clients were able to see the progress with their own eyes, real excitement started to spread throughout the community. I’m proud of what IBM and HCL have been able to accomplish with our clients, Business Partners and IBM Champions. It’s a major achievement.
Q2. What is the basic narrative of Domino V10?
The core value of V10 is application development, deployment, and operation that is faster, modern, and with lower total cost of ownership (TCO).
Imagine: Developers can take advantage of any REST API and do full-stack web development with Domino. Now, developers who traditionally use a MongoDB with Express, React, and Node.js (MERN) can enhance any Domino app experience, or access data within a Domino database, from the tools they already know well. We’ve received positive feedback from clients so far on the REST API functionality that’s available from within LotusScript.
Companies also wanted to preserve and extend their investment in existing applications by using them on mobile devices and host them on the cloud. Their options now include IBM Domino Mobile Apps for the Apple iPad, and the ability to host their apps on the IBM Cloud with Domino Apps on Cloud.
Lastly, throughout our beta programs, HCL’s focus has been on both product quality and innovation. We want to make sure that users have a good experience with the product anytime and everywhere, and it’s clear that the betas we’ve run have had a positive impact on the product and the community.

Q3. When will be the release of Domino V10 in the German Language?

Q4. When will be the release of Domino V10 for Mac?
We announced a Notes 10.0.0 on MacOS beta just after the launch. People who are already in the beta program will see the new release in the Domino portfolio beta forum. There were two main reasons for doing a proper beta for this release: First, the Notes 10.0.0 code base is the same on Windows and on Mac, so you have functional parity. This is something that has not happened in a while. Second, we had to build Notes 10.0.0 to work on Apple’s new Mojave macOS release, which came out on September 25.

Q5. What are the next main steps in the Domino masterplan?
It all boils down to three things. First, building great products with our customers. Second, being open and integrated as much as possible. And third, ensuring timely releases that include purposeful innovation and high product quality.
The main pieces of value we want to deliver in V11 are the following:
2) Evolve Notes and Verse on Premises (VOP) mail capabilities, and add support for Exchange Web Services (EWS) to enable Microsoft Outlook and Apple Mail clients to use a Domino server.
3) Powerful analytics and search.
4) Improved operations and lower TCO.
We are very conscious of the fact that we need to do more to enable our clients to run their Domino servers wherever they want — on-premises, hybrid, or in their cloud of choice. We also want to provide more ways for clients to access their apps, such as mail on the device and application of their choosing. For example Domino Mobile Apps on Android.

Q6. Do you know some insights from the Domino Jam with Barry Rosen and Thomas Hampel at the DNUG Domino Day on November 15, 2018?
In our V11 jams we want to focus on the most important outcomes that these roles are looking to achieve faster, easier, and more reliably than before. We intend to announce the V11 roadmap at IBM Think in February 2019 in San Francisco.
Q7. What’s behind the strategy of making Domino work in other environments and therefore being not confrontational (anymore)?
When looking at our customers, we see that many are invested in a Microsoft ecosystem. And in some cases, they are starting to use Google services more and more. By creating an open Domino platform, we’re creating opportunities for people to use their apps in new ways — such as on mobile and on the cloud in V10 — to deliver additional value.
We know that Domino can’t be and shouldn’t be an island. We need to focus on being open and integrated wherever possible. So, the decision to integrate with Microsoft is a no-brainer. We want our customers to feel 100% satisfied with Domino as a modern, viable platform for years to come — and for us, that means co-existing with Microsoft and other collaboration ecosystems.
Q8. Is there a strategy to simplify the different naming of the IBM products?
Yes, that’s one of our goals for V11. There are historical reasons for why we’ve ended up with a range of product names, which has led to some inconsistency concerning how new capabilities or products are named.
We intend to establish a portfolio naming system. You should have noticed some of our initial efforts with the revitalisation of the Domino brand, i.e., #domino2025, #dominoforever, and the naming standards when we refer to applications such as IBM Domino Apps on Cloud and IBM Domino Mobile Apps. Q9. Are you going to visit the #dnug46 on June 4+5, 2019?
Yes, I’m really looking forward to attending next year’s annual conference in Essen. It’s an exciting time to be part of the Domino community. Also, with German-based Thomas Hampel on my product management team, we have a direct presence in the DACH market, which is excellent news for clients and business partners as we reflect their needs in the development of the Domino roadmap.
